Common questions
How much does it cost to have my taxes done?
A basic return, mostly employment income and common deductions, is $80 to $120. Rental properties, self-employment income and back years cost more, and I'll tell you the price before I start.
What do I need to send you?
Your tax slips (T4, T5 and any others), RRSP contribution receipts, receipts for things like donations, medical expenses and child care, and last year's notice of assessment if you have it. If you're self-employed, add a summary of your income and expenses for the year.
I'm self-employed. Do I need an accountant for my taxes?
You don't have to have one, but a self-employed return has more moving parts: business income and expenses, vehicle use, HST if you're registered, and a June 15 filing deadline while any tax owing is still due April 30. It's easy to miss deductions or end up paying interest, so it's usually worth having it done properly.
I'm a few years behind on filing. Is that a problem?
It happens a lot and it's fixable. I file the back returns together, starting with the oldest, and deal with any CRA letters as they come in.
What's the T777 and can I use it?
The T777 is CRA's Statement of Employment Expenses. It's for employees whose employer requires them to pay certain expenses to earn their income, like a vehicle or a home office. Your employer has to confirm that requirement, so check with them first. If you think it might apply, I'll go over it with you and fill out the T777 when I prepare your return. A basic T777 is included in the price of the return; if there are a lot of expenses to sort through, I'll tell you the extra cost first.
Can you help me set up my CRA My Account?
Yes. I'll walk you through setting it up, so you can see your slips, notices and balance online. It's included with your return.
Do I have to come in and drop off my slips?
No. Everything goes through my secure client hub, so there's no office visit and nothing to print. You can ask me questions there or by phone, text or email, and I'll answer the same business day.
I'm employed in a trade and buy my own tools. Can I write them off?
Maybe. CRA has a tradesperson's tools deduction of up to $1,000 a year for eligible tools you bought for your job, but there are conditions. I'll check whether you qualify when I do your return, so hang on to the receipts.
