Lots of small jobs
A plumbing business can run a lot of service calls in a week, each with its own invoice, parts and HST. If those aren't recorded as they happen, they pile up into a mess at the end of the month.
I reconcile your books every month, so you can see what came in, what went out and how much HST you owe before the remittance is due.
Parts in the van
If you keep fittings, valves and fixtures in the van or the shop to use on jobs, that stock counts as inventory. CRA has you value your inventory at the end of each year, and what's still on the shelf affects your profit for the year.
Counting it properly at year-end gives you a real profit number instead of a guess.
Licensing and apprentices
Plumber 306A is a compulsory trade in Ontario, so you need a Certificate of Qualification or a registered training agreement to do the work. Plumber is also a Red Seal trade.
If you employ an apprentice in the first two years of their apprenticeship, the federal Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit can give you 10% of their eligible wages, up to $2,000 per apprentice per year.
WSIB
If your plumbing business does construction work, WSIB coverage is mandatory even if it's just you, with some exemptions. Once you hire, most Ontario businesses have to register with WSIB within 10 days of the first hire. I keep your premiums tracked and your reporting on time.
What I handle for plumbers
- Every service call recorded with its parts and HST
- Monthly bank and credit card reconciliation
- Inventory counted into your year-end numbers
- Payroll and T4s for your crew
- WSIB premiums tracked
- Year-end statements and your T2 or personal return
Monthly bookkeeping plans run $400 to $2,000+ a month depending on how much I'm handling, and most personal returns are $80 to $120.

Do I need to count my van stock at year-end?
If you carry parts to use on jobs, yes. Stock you haven't used yet isn't an expense yet, so it has to be counted to get your profit right. I'll tell you what to count and how.
Should I incorporate my plumbing business?
It depends on how much the business makes and how much you need to take out to live on. Incorporating can make sense once the business earns more than you need personally, but it adds cost and paperwork. That's a good thing to go over on the free 20-minute call.
Do I charge HST on parts and labour?
If you're registered for HST, yes. In Ontario you charge 13% on the whole taxable invoice, parts and labour, and remit it. You can generally claim back the HST you paid on your own business purchases.
